Whether you know it or not!
September 7, 2008
We are all in a war - make no mistake about it. This war is different however, more different than any other fought in the past. There are no wounded and bleeding prisoners, no POW camps, no aircraft bombing raids, and no actual blood is shed. This war is fought on the plains of marketing, perception management, credibility, public awareness, and money.
Although no actual blood is shed, there are plenty of victims and families in ruins. We see them every day in our office, people who have been taught to believe that Health is an outside-in process. Peope are taught that drugs will do the work that the body is somehow incapable of doing. A belief that somehow people have been given too many organs and their excess needs to be removed begins to be accepted. And no one ever questions why? No one ever asks this question:
"Why is my body not doing what it is programmed and designed to do?”
The result is that as a nation most of us willingly subject ourselves to medical rituals / procedures that often have not been adequately tested but nevertheless are passed by the FDA, and various Health Depts. In fact less than 20% of medical procedures used today actually have sufficient testing to substantiate their use in daily practice. This factoid is conveniently overlooked by the media and medicine as a whole. Quite the double standard and the unfortunate result is a perpetual flow of unnecessary surgeries and medications. This has only worsened our health and allowed us the distinction of spending more than any other country on the planet for medical care and still ranking 37th in overall health world wide.
We know that using their dominating influence in the world of science and politics, drug companies are systematically working to widen the very boundaries that define illness: Old conditions and health problems are expanded, new ones are created, and the markets for medication grow ever larger.
Mild problems are redefined as serious illnesses, and common, run-of-the-mill complaints are labeled as serious medical conditions requiring drug treatments. Runny noses are now Allergic Rhinitis, Measles is now a deadly disease that apparently kills millions, PMS has become a psychiatric disorder - as has hyperactivity, and even common shyness now requires Zoloft which is conveniently available to cast off the demons of being shy. Incontinence has been elevated to the status of "Overactive Bladder Disease". Being "at-risk" for a condition such as high cholesterol or low bone density is sold as a disease in its own right.
Widening the boundaries of illness and lowering (and narrowing) the threshold for what is medically considered "normal" so that treatment can be initiated immediately, is creating millions of new patients - and billions of dollars in new profits - and is threatening to bankrupt health care systems all over the world. We are sliding ever so quickly towards Gadsdens' dream of "selling to everyone."
Best of Health to You,
Dr. Dave Marquis, DC, DACBN
