Every year I have dreaded the fall return to school not because of the late nights of helping with homework but due to the typical onslaught of illness that seems to follow in the community.
Over the years I have identified changes that I could employ that have had a definite effect on minimizing illness but rarely were we as effective as I would have like to have been. Recently I have come across some information that seems to be paying off in a big way in terms of enabling a person to keep their immune system working and avoid the perpetual illness cycle in the fall and winter.
So, here are four (4) items to absolutely have on hand to "Beat the Bugs"
Now you are probably getting sick of me touting Vitamin D since I have commented on it at least 3 times this year but its such an amazing nutrient and so impactful in terms of immune function that I would be doing a disservice to not mention it again in this article.
Vitamin D is used in a mega dose for a very short period of time. This gives your body a rapid immune stimulus and has a profound effect against both viral and bacterial infections. Essentially you will take 30,000-40,000 IU per day for 3-5 days. This dose is not to be taken for more than a week (but studies do show it to not be toxic even up to 1-4 months at mega doses larger than I am noting here.) After the initial heavy dose you continue with a lower dose of 2000-5000 IU per day (dose depends on age).
On a related note and in regards to Influenza (The Flu) in particular Here is a recent article on Vitamin D that is outstanding and makes an extremely strong case for using VITAMIN D INSTEAD OF THE FLU VACCINE. Make sure you read the last half of this article as it details the mechanism of D and immunity as well as I have ever seen.
Next the Argentyn 23 is used to both act as an upper respiratory barrier to infection as well as an antibiotic to clear out any unfriendly bugs that may be trying to take up residence in your airways.
The next two are Chinese herbals that were introduced to me several years ago by Jenny Dull, LAc (a fantastic Acupunturist here in Arroyo Grande, I highly recommend her). These formulas became favorites of mine due to the rapid manner in which they work. The Pinellia is a great decongestant and the Gan Mao Ling suports the health of the respiratory system, immune system and the gastro intestinal system. Both provide results in a day or two.
If your not improving after a few days then I recommend coming into the office or seeing your personal physician.
There are endless numbers of other immune stimulants that could be discussed but these four listed here constitue my mainstays in the arsenal to "Beat the Bugs" for 2008.
